Can You Use Your Funding for Second-Hand AT?
Yes — all three major Australian funding programs recognise second-hand assistive technology, provided it meets safety standards and value-for-money requirements.
National Disability Insurance Scheme
NDIS can fund second-hand AT when it meets the reasonable and necessary criteria and demonstrates value for money compared to a new equivalent.
- Participant-managed and plan-managed funding accepted
- OT or AT Advisor assessment required for medium/high-risk AT
- Assistive Team is NDIS registered — full documentation provided
Victorian SWEP Program
Victoria’s State-wide Equipment Program maintains its own pool of refurbished, quality-checked equipment for loan or purchase.
- SWEP top-up contributions when sourcing privately
- Eligible: NDIS participants, DSP, aged-care, hospital discharge
- OT or AT Advisor referral required
- SWEP + NDIS funding can be coordinated
Support at Home Program
Australia’s Support at Home program (replacing HCP from July 2025) includes dedicated AT and Reablement budgets for second-hand equipment.
- Mobility aids, bathroom equipment, daily living aids
- Must be safe, functional, and value-for-money
- Care manager and OT work together to approve purchases
- Communication devices also eligible
