Can I Use NDIS Funding for a Gym Membership?

Staying active is crucial for physical health, mental well-being, and managing the effects of many disabilities. If you're looking to join a local fitness centre, you are probably asking the common question: Will the NDIS pay for my gym membership?

The Short Answer: No, But There’s a Catch

Under the NDIS guidelines, a standard gym membership is considered a day-to-day living cost. Because gym fees are an expense that everyone—with or without a disability—has to pay, the NDIS will not fund the membership fee itself.

However, the NDIS will fund the extra support you need to access the gym because of your disability. While you have to cover the entry swipe-card, your NDIS plan can be utilized to make sure you can actually get there and exercise safely.

Official NDIS Guideline: You can read the official government stance on this by visiting the NDIS Social and Recreation Support guidelines, which state that participants are expected to pay for basic entrance fees and standard memberships.

What Gym-Related Supports WILL the NDIS Fund?

If your NDIS plan includes goals related to improving your health, fitness, or community participation, you can use your funding for the disability-related supports that surround your gym visits. Here is what is typically covered:

1. Exercise Physiology & Physio

If a registered Exercise Physiologist or Physiotherapist designs a specialized workout program for your disability, the NDIS can fund their professional time (usually out of your Capacity Building budget). The session can even take place at the gym.

2. Support Workers

If you cannot safely use gym equipment on your own, or need help changing into activewear, your Core Supports budget can pay a support worker to accompany you, assist you with the machines, and ensure you exercise safely.

3. Transport Costs

If your disability prevents you from driving or taking public transport to the gym, your plan may cover the transport costs to get you to and from the facility.

4. Specialized Assistive Tech

The NDIS may fund modified sports equipment, specialized gripping aids, or customized mobility supports that allow you to participate in your chosen physical activity safely.

How to Secure Funding for Fitness Supports

To get approval for a support worker, transport, or specialized allied health sessions at the gym, you need to prove that the support is "reasonable and necessary."

The best way to do this is by providing an assessment from your Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist. They will need to write a letter or report linking the gym-based support directly to your disability needs and the specific goals laid out in your NDIS plan.
